Sometimes I wish these social websites had personal publishing categories. Like tags, but enforced and with UI support. Every post would be published under one or more categories. Followers would subscribe to a subset of the categories. Say you like my saucy commentary on software freedom, but dislike my posts showcasing my limited art skills. You could follow me, but select only the "Software Freedom" category, leaving you blissfully unaware of my struggles with pen and ink. #MorningThoughts

hostile public services in Seattle: a bus stop with no bench.

Red Hat's opensource.com published a piece by Facebook's attorney Heather Meeker yesterday that was fairly scornful of concerns about the React + Patent Grant license they are using for React and almost every other open source project. Facebook's patentleft license may be legal but the way they did it is very community-hostile.

Delightfully, Red Hat agreed to publish my response explaining that.

Ok so:
✅shows parent toot above reply box
✅ replies carry over parent's CWs
✅ replies carry over parent's visibility
✅ sends push notifs properly
✅ doesn't make the reply box tiny
✅ doesn't look awful
✅ has web version's custom css

Yep this really is better than any of the apps. witches.town/media/mA3kqKjelpM

You Can’t Stay Here: The Efficacy of Reddit’s 2015 Ban Examined Through Hate Speech

comp.social.gatech.edu/papers/

22-page article about a study. In short: banning drove people off Reddit to other sites, primarily Voat. Banning is an effective measure against hate speech, it drives the offenders to darker corners of the Internet.

Informal poll: If you play a game...

How often does your group typically meet?
How long do you typically play in real time?
How long does that generally cover in game time?
How many people are on the group regularly?

Just got my @cnc stickers in the mail... can't wait 2 stick them on things... & great design btw

android is the new windows

-ships with heavy multi-GB OS and preinstalled apps you don't want
- so widespread that it's difficult to find apps written for anything else (other than The Apple One)
- immediately has to download several GB of updates when you start the device the first time
- tries to lock down the device so that the stock OS is the only thing that can run on it

the only difference is, android is ostensibly open source, so barely anyone's bothered to write an OS that isn't android-based

Everybody's got baggage.
