@Efi *psst* try #OpenBSD, those Linux flavors are just the same vanilla icecream with different toppings.
Regarding desktops xfce is also very nice and if you are into something more spartan I highly recommend i3, cwm or awesome.

@Efi Xfce is pretty minimalistic while still maintaining the desktop metaphor. Not sure what exactly you mean by software compatibility.
