So the only way to play my PS2 currently is by wiring it up to my capture box and using the HDMI output from that.

Unfortunately, the capture box is not very good. After powering it on, it needs to be connected to a PC with its drivers installed, or else it won't display anything. Once it's connected, it works! You can even disconnect the USB cable! Until you want to switch display modes, then you have to reconnect it. Otherwise it shows a blue screen until you go back to the first mode.

>_>

Good thing most PS2 games are 480i only, so I can just leave it alone. But if I wanna boot up ATV Offroad Fury 2 and switch it to 480p (which makes it look *much* better and less jittery on my crappy monitor), I gotta have my laptop handy to plug it into.

Kinda annoying, huh. But my setup ain't the greatest anyway. I need a proper monitor, first of all.

(And believe it or not, there are some Dell monitors with component inputs these days!)

@Skirmisher i eventually sprung for the Framemesiter and a simple uvcvideo HDMI capture dongle to avoid all these weird issues when playing games with older video cables and whatnot. witches.town/media/Yx8V2MekGaJ

@lifning @Skirmisher this is a good way to go, just has an upfront cost unfortunately

(i have the much older XRGB-2 that outputs to VGA)

@alyx @lifning Yeah, money... I don't need The Best Shit, though, I just need...decent shit.

Okay I haven't ranted about this shitty monitor yet though, have I? It's this piece of junk my roommate got last year, it's 4K but the refresh rate is awful at ANY resolution, even ones it CLAIMS it's doing 60 Hz on. Also occasionally it flickers or goes all pink-tinted, but so far I haven't seen the latter in my own usage. The reviews are terrible and report the same problems.

@alyx @lifning So, you see why I want Literally Anything Better Than This.

I wonder if a small TV would be a good idea... Since they're all so big these days, maybe I could get a small decent-quality one for cheap. But I have no idea, I guess.

@Skirmisher @lifning what's your price range and required features?

@alyx @lifning Ummmm let's see:
•Somewhere in the lower hundreds? How much do screens cost these days? Ideally lower since I'm using my parents' money, but whatever. Let's just say $300. ("I hope that doesn't make me look weird," she worries, irrationally.)
•1080p? I guess.
•Actually gives me aspect ratio options, so the PS2 can be 4:3 like it should be
•Has a component input (optional, but nice because my HD PVR 2 is annoying to work with, even if I can get by with it)

@Skirmisher @lifning so after pokin' around and thinking about your use cases i think a pretty sweet setup would be the Open Source Scan Converter (~$220)

encrypted.google.com/search?q=

paired with a relatively cheap ~24" 1080p PC monitor known for low input lag; many would fit this bill. you could also easily use the monitor with any PC you might need to.

for ideal future proofness this monitor would also support FreeSync (while this is associated with icky AMD GPUs, it is also an open standard that may see wider use) or G-Sync (proprietary NVidia, adds a lot to the cost unfortunately).

@alyx @Skirmisher whoa, this thing looks rad! i'd totally be looking at getting one if i didn't already have the mini meme upscaler. 👀

@lifning @Skirmisher i know, right? i don't follow this hyper-enthusiast retro stuff anymore so i was quite surprised to find this. the traditional micomsoft solutions and such are overpriced

i used to interact with the vg perfection guy (who's selling them) on twitter, great guy. guess he's movin' on up
