LB: gonna solicit a few more responses to that question but I'm pretty heartened by the responses I already got from it and think I've got enough inspiration to start working up a couple scripts for a potential chemistry podcast

Oh, I want to ask folks here a question, in connection with a project I've been thinking about off and on the last few months. the question is...what do you think, in general, about the subject of ?

and I mean, _any_ thoughts at all. I want all the answer. think chemistry is the worst subject you had in school? let me know about it! do you think it's a dismal, second-rate science? that's cool too. if you think it's interesting chiefly because you get to set things on fire, I want to hear that as well :p

Hi newcomers.

I'm a trans woman in computer science. I'm bi. Currently, in my life, I'm looking for a clothes iron in this hackerspacey sort of place to see if I can get appliques on my halloween costume. Other than that, I'd say I have nothing to envy in life.

seriously derailed my plans for the day by overeating and then sleeping :/ I'm feeling pretty wiped out from work I guess...but I'm gonna get myself back on track and get back to "Mother 3". I did figure out where I was going wrong last time

"So, what fursonas have you been through?" (repost from Birdland) Afficher plus

ok, gonna break my earlier / pledge and definitely recommend following @loveisanalogue because they're doing something I only _wish_ I could do, which is regularly use mastodon for

- I found it! I know what we've been doing wrong
- What is it?
- Knowledge! We know too much about how we work! We have a deterministic awareness of ourselves
- What?
- You see, that's the things with humans. They've no idea how they work. They make it up as go along - a soul here, an ego there. They don't know -
- But -
- and that's where emotions, and ultimately consciousness, come from!
- From ignorance?
- Yes!

"Build" just oozes style, and there have been some beautiful shots and compositions. (one reason I like to watch even second-rate Kamen Rider.) also unlike the previous season Ex-Aid which was unabashedly "tropey" and fairy-tale-like with its storytelling, giving us types rather than characters, Build is going for a more personal approach, and the show's actually succeeded in making me cry a couple times.

mind you, I cry over everything

a brief word on Kamen Rider Build, the new Kamen Rider series, which I've watched with the whole polycule up to episode 5. Gravis, who doesn't like most tokusatsu we've tried to show him (with the curious exception of ToQger), is loving Build.

It's going at a breakneck pace. I'm a bit astonished by how much has happened in five episodes, compared to some series (cf. "Ghost", in which nothing much happened even by two-thirds of the season.) we get to meet the second Rider in the second episode! usually they take a bit longer to work up to that.

ok, I _was_ gonna stream, but then I got sidetracked into making lunch and ate too much and now I just want to lie down >_<

The greatest trick intellectual property ever pulled

was pretending it was for the direct benefit of lucky individuals, and not for the direct benefit of corporations

(somewhat figuratively, at least --
book publishers were collecting human efforts and benefitting from them for a long time before proper IP laws got in place, IIRC)

one of the little results of capitalism that continues to piss me off whenever it comes to mind (which, to be fair, isn't often), is how Pyrex-brand cookware isn't actually Pyrex, i.e. borosilicate glass of low thermal expansion any more. Corning spun off the consumer-goods division to some satellite company decades ago, who stopped making the cookware out of borosilicate, switching to tempered soda-lime (i.e. cheapass shit) glass.

That's the great thing about Brands™. Their greatness dies, but the Brand™ lives on, the lingering stench produced by the rotting corpse of a technological achievement. witches.town/media/j_P1U_9pL_w

For example, various pop-science media say that Feynman had the idea that the Periodic Table has to stop at element 137, because (the reason varies from one version of the story to another).

Nope. That was Schiff, Snyder and Weinberg in 1939: doi.org/10.1103/PhysRev.57.315

They saw that a crude calculation implied something wacky happens at element 137, *and* why the approximation involved in that calculation shouldn't be taken too seriously.

`It's not like I'm tooting,' Case heard someone say, as he shouldered his way through the crowd around the door of the Chat. `It's like my body's developed this massive meme deficiency.' It was a Fediverse voice and a Fediverse joke. The Catsubo was an instance for professional shitposters; you could lurk there for a week and never see two words of Discourse.

It showed up about two weeks ago, a figure at the corner of your eye as you walked to the library under the yellowing leaves and light rain. Indistinct, slightly stooped, a couple blocks back and moving your direction. You saw it again on your return, out of the ordinary but not alarming.

You saw it again a couple days later as you ducked into the cafe. Same slouch, same gait. Since then you've seen it three or four more times, slightly closer each time.

Is it still there?
