@thursdayb not as such, but my girlfriend and I discovered some years ago that our upstairs neighbors were fellow furries because we picked the name "Furry Central" and they picked the name "The Unicorn Forest" or something similar

and so the gradual corruption of Tazmily Village and its denizens isn't just an ordinary calamity, it's the heartbreaking failure of what's literally humanity's last chance. it's people being taught to scorn and turn their backs on the last surviving remnant of everything that was still good in humanity, all their hopes and dreams, to go chasing after...can they even say what they're chasing? just something different, something better, than what they'd once been happy with

Thus "Mother 3" strikes a chord buried deep in the cultural consciousness of everyone touched by Western civilization, at least: the deep-seated feeling that we are ALL survivors, the descendants of the lucky few who escaped from a disaster, preserving what fragments of knowledge and beauty they could salvage from the ruins. so the big reveal of "Mother 3" is that the village of Tazmily isn't an ordinary village but, in fact, the last remnant of the destruction of humanity. presumably some time after the events of "EarthBound" humans finally blew it for good, leaving a tiny group of survivors who decided their only chance to rebuild is to reprogram themselves. they write a new story for their lives as peaceful villagers

@ErgiWitch @Laurelai oh, agreed. to me it's all about building a sense of meaning, and meaning can come from many places. @kel, my familiar, happens to attach particular significance to objects and events that come to us by chance, for example...but one doesn't often just FIND tarot cards (maybe at a thrift shop)
