I'd feel more optimistic about the chances of emerging from the wreckage of the current United States without violence if I saw much hope of pushback against the nearly unlimited authority of the police. And I don't mean quarter-measures like more body cameras and "oversight".

@Maenad I suppose I have a bit of cultural programming to rewrite. You do get the occasional storied partnership between two men but almost never in the sciences (apropos of nothing, Diels and Alder apparently hated each other).

I have never and at this rate probably will never have a job as a scientist, so I can still afford to treat it as a passion. It's the only thing that's gotten me through some days, that way

@Maenad I admit I've tended to favor the scientists who regarded their wives as partners in their work and who shared credit. Not too many examples; Louis and Mary Feiser come to mind, and of course the Curies

@abbenm I'm by no means an Orwell fan but I do think he was correct to suspect that using hackneyed phrases in political discourse is a bad sign that the speaker is trying to hide muddled thinking or nasty ideas behind comfortable-sounding idioms. (Reminded of a recent comment I saw from a Democratic loyalist that primarying Nancy Pelosi was bad because "you don't change horses midstream", no other reason given)

29. I've given the idea of going fully vegetarian some serious thought. Daria and I have come close, at times, but then after some time of cooking only vegetarian meals one of us invariably caves and wants (say) a burger.
