#unpopularopinion Maybe he improved in "Preacher"--I've never been inclined to find out--but on the evidence of "Hellblazer" Garth Ennis writes adolescent horror-porn rubbish. can't stand what he did to one of my favorite comics
@TrollDecker ugh, sounds like he never grew up then, he's still Edgy McEdgelord
@kara_dreamer Pretty much. Also included was a lesbian who was accused of murdering her husband, and an all-female tribe which she proceeds to join. Leopard-skin bikini and all.
And said tribe tries to cut Phantom Eagle's dick off. >.>
@TrollDecker oh for fuck's sake, did Ennis watch the snu-snu episode of Futurama and think, "what a great story, it just needs to be grittier!"
@kara_dreamer Honestly, that's probably the best summary of the comic as a whole, if the island of (literal) poop at the end of it isn't. 🤣
@TrollDecker what really irked me about Ennis is that because he was hopeless at characterization of any subtlety or delicacy, his taking-over "Hellblazer" meant no more small-scale stories about personal horrors, which has always been the sort of horror that's worked best on me. With Ennis it was all posturing devils and snivelling angels.
@kara_dreamer I read "Preacher" about ten years ago. It was ... very uneven, and probably about twice as long as it needed to be.
@kara_dreamer I'm not sure how disgusting I'd find the Edginess(TM) if I tried reading it again today, since I've perhaps grown more discerning in that regard.
@kara_dreamer As of the 2015 Secret Wars, he was still writing adolescent crap in the form of Where Monsters Dwell and turning Phantom Eagle into a right whiny misogynist shit. 😑
