what cognitive malfunction makes it impossible for me to remember exceptions to routine, especially when under any pressure
@Miffy yeah, wondering if I should get some cognitive tests done :/
@kara_dreamer If you wanna and feel it would help I guess? idk I was diagnosed at 7 so like, never really had a choice over it
@Miffy I grew up in the late '70s when autism was obscure still, and my overprotective and not very stable mother probably wouldn't have even thought of it. I'm partly convinced that my brother definitely *was* autistic, for his problems with conversation and socialization were an order of magnitude worse than mine, and he had some very definite indications, like eye contact and hyperfocusing on his hobbies to an extreme degree
@kara_dreamer ahh right, yeah, I know a lot of folks who would have been diagnosed if they lived now, my dad and grandpa are definitely autisc, but getting a diagnosis was impossible for them due to lack of knowledge
Yeah that does sound like v clear autism trates tbh?
Common manifestation: I'm upstairs in my bedroom, waiting out the clock until it's time to go downstairs and collect myself for work. "Don't forget that you need to collect a couple items from downstairs before you leave," I tell myself.
Then, thirty seconds later, I march downstairs, do my usual few pre-flight checks, grab my bag and leave. I remember the other items when I'm a block away (and then decide it's too late to go back for them, dithering long enough to miss my bus or train)
@kara_dreamer relatable content
I suspect that reciting details to myself aloud would help, but I'm habituated to doing everything internally. Talking things through with myself has been a surprisingly difficult habit to build up for someone who openly talks with her alternate personalities online
@kara_dreamer This used to happen to me a lot-- the way I get around this problem is to pack the things I need into or on top of my bag or shoes-- one of the last things I grab before leaving. That way I'm very unlikely to forget it. ^^
@mawr ah, that would require planning. *chuckles* or at least acting on a remembered self-assigned task BEFORE it's strictly necessary to remember it (because if I wait until the "right" time, I forget)
@kara_dreamer *giggles* Okay, fair enough. ^^
@kara_dreamer telling myself stuff out loud really helps me remember/work through them, but I've been in the habit of talking to myself out loud since I was in grade school and just never "grew out of it" like the teachers assured my mom I would. XD
@kara_dreamer dunno but I've got one of those too. /hi5
@kara_dreamer like given you've said you suspect you might be on the spectrum it could be something to do with that?
I have the same issue myself XP
