In my vision...Chara fled from a family that crushed them under the weight of expectations that Chara did not want...expectations about identity, expectations about gender. They ran away to die, but a miracle occurred and instead of death they found a loving family of monsters who accepted him as one of their own. Chara should have been happy...
...but they were not, because they ran from one set of expectations into another. Asgore and Toriel were kind, loving, but still they objectified Chara, turning them into not only their second child but "the future of monsters and humans". Asgore calls Chara this, before they died.
