@guerrillarain YES. My partner's wife and I sometimes watch bad old movies for laughs and one night were were watching one of the original 70s "aliens built the pyramids" documentary. We were having fun mocking it for not being able to tell a flower from a rocket ship when suddenly it says that the aliens were perfect nordic white people from space, that white people on Earth are their descendants and superior to native earth humans. We were so disgusted we just shut up and turned off the movie.
actually the thing about mastodon that keeps hitting me is that it's a return to the governance model of the internet of the 90s, which is the "local dictator", with a single admin or a small mod team who are the sole owners and operators of a site. and like, oh right, anybody who's only used, say, twitter and facebook and youtube and tumblr and myspace and so forth and so on would have had absolutely no exposure to, because all major social media platforms online for the past ten years or so have been huge corporate monoliths (or wannabe huge corporate monoliths). getting mad at brad on livejournal was a very different thing than getting mad at jack on twitter or david karp on tumblr, because lj was brad's site in a way that was very different from jack being CEO of twitter
This may be an unpopular opinion, idk, but blaming technology and accomplishments of ancient cultures on aliens is... kinda sorta hella racist.

@real_dreamer I was wrong, turns out hashtags do work. A popular one is the introductions hashtag. Which is simply "# I N T R O D U C T I O N S", all one word.
Forgot to add in 3 that local will let you see everything in YOUR instance only. So far it looks like the pound sign doesn't do anything.
1.) No idea what pound sign does yet
2.) There are 4 privacy settings on the lower left hand side of the box you type into. Public, Unlisted, Followers Only, Direct.
Public: Everyone can see
Unlisted, as in not viewable from the time line
Followers: Only your followers can see it
Direct: Only you and the person you pinged can see it, pinged as in @'d them
3.) The feed is in the global or local timeline as in, global will allow you to view everything (unless the server your in blocks an instance for being abusive).
4.) Instances are other servers hosting the mastodon software with a domain name as far as i can tell.

@real_dreamer mastodon is FEDERATED. As in, many number of people can host their own instances and they can interact. When you @ users, you have to @username@servername because the software won't know who you're tryuing to @
