i forgot that this did a whole disk backup including the free space
so it's like

@catoutofbed gzip may be able to write sparse files

alternately, you could

zcat backup.img.gz | lz4 > backup.img.lz4

and then unlz4 it and it'll become sparse because lz4 definitely does that right
