@ashkitten personally I'm not a fan of littering code with asserts that panic when comparing your project to the security issues in BIND9, of which most of the recent ones have been... assert failures

saying "I wrote this because of the security vulnerabilities in a competitor project" and having the same class of vulnerabilities as that project (assert panics!) is not a good look imo
