"Now that we're already driving there and need to rent a space to cook anyway, let's sleep there. Get a tent and sleeping bag before we leave next week" - Wait, what?

And it's really hard to say no after saying yes several times. Especially for me, since I barely kept any friendships going in my dysphoric pre-transition haze.

@muffinista What's the policy on bots that might accidentally dig up something offensive for Botsin.space? I'm building a bot that uses quotes from authors on Goodreads, based off user prompts. So it would post the quote, in the context of the person/character who said it. If it spits out something offensive and I take it off in a timely manner, is that okay? Or do I need to make sure it doesn't post problematic stuff in the first place?

@ravenna @noxy what matters is you can tell it really kills them to not have an audience, and be in a place where they realize it. People aren't avoiding them because of their truthbombs or superior logic. People just don't like them or their ideology.

@ravenna @noxy sarcasm. I mean, I also just like the idea that they're vaguely libertarian in this concept, and that Mastodon really is closer to the concept of a marketplace of ideas, in that people have control over which ones they have to scroll through.

So the fact crappy servers get isolated without a central authority means the invisible hand really wants them to shut up.

@alyx @noxy yeah, I think it was just the context. Taking to a colleague about writing a Twitter bot (which I think is rad), taking about tv I bailed on halfway through, and I get a really uncomfortable reminder of the cis gaze. And it sucks because sometimes I'm scared I'm not fitting in as well as I could be because over time, I'm sure everyone figured me out, and I'm not sure how cis people actually feel about us on a reactionary level. Before I accepted I was trans, I felt overwhelmed when I saw a trans person. Not disgusted, not attracted, but very much a sort of, "They're able to do that? It's allowed?" Sort of way.

@noxy plus, I just like Mulder so much some part of me felt betrayed, I guess... Silly.

@noxy yeah, that's the thing. I feel like if she weren't so visibly Mulder and maybe covered the beard shadow a bit, I'd have had less of a reaction. I do hate my voice, but I'd say it's more that I settle into dude voice after thinking way too hard about resonance and pitch than doing a falsetto or anything. So I like to think my voice isn't like some bad trans caricatures I've seen.

@noxy A colleague made a Twitter bot with Twin Peaks screenshots as part of the corpus, and when I saw Duchovney's character, so unexpectedly, my brain went right to, "Is that how I look to them?" I also try to pass although I'm pretty sure my voice gives me away, so some passing anxiety poured in, along with guilt for wanting to pass.

I figure I might as well ask it. If I watch Twin Peaks, will David Duchovney's character make me regret it? Is there character there to be all, "Boy, nothing is ever quite right in this small town! What a strange vaguely menacing place!," Or is she just a character who is trans, and that's that?
