I assume that this is going to work, which potentially has some weird implications for having the character limit in the first place. Like... this seems like it's not a feature of the protocol, but a feature of the Mastodon UI, and that therefore you can't assume it and it's more than a little bit silly to have the restriction at all. It does inform users' use of the system, but people can run their own instance and do whatever they would like, and violate the expectations of Mastodon users in the wider federated space. just 12 more
