This is why I've never done the "rewatch" thing with this show on the ones I've seen - too much pain involved.

So I never finished The Office - I kind of gave up while it was one like right before Michael Scott left - I got a couple epsidoes behind and heard he was leaving so I was like whatevs.

Anyway, I've been marathoning the season and now I'm on season 9. Only thing: WHY THE FUCK DON'T PEOPLE EVER TALK ABOUT WHAT THEY WANT AND NEED AND THEIR FEELINGS THIS IS TOO REALISTIC

For what it's worth, I consider myself a traditionalist of sorts. It's just that my reading of the tradition demands justice and the fundamental equality of all humans and recognizes the limitations of the context of the original revelation has to be transcended in light of that truth.

Also this one guy has been riding my tail for a while about being a "modernist" or something. It turns out he's a nudist? Now, I don't have a problem with that, but, like, if you're trying to position yourself as a traditionalist who's saving everybody from those spooky untraditional people, you probably shouldn't be running around naked in the woods with other dudes?

Fortunately, it's not all filled with those silly "traditionalists". Those are just the people who have free time during the week to write screeds in response. There are people like the author of the piece, there are people with actual responsibilities who are reasonable, and of course there are a fair mass of simple regular people who probably agree with the article but, again, have real jobs and don't argue on the internet all day.

It's like, to these people, anti-feminism and adherence to old cultural norms is an integral part of the Gospel or something. And not even some of the things we here on witches.town take for granted, but, rather, even going all the way back to fighting over the idea that "man" is kind of outdated. The use of the word "man" as a generic term in English is now a part of Christian dogma to them.

This is the state of the discourse in some corners of #Orthodoxy today. It's silly. That's the most charitable word I can muster for it.

Anyway, I think this is a good point. "anthropos" in Greek is like "homo" in Latin and really is about "human". The term "man" is seen as gendered now. This probably isn't a big enough deal to start a war over, but it's a good point.

People responded to this article... poorly. You can probably imagine it. Basically, there's a contingent that argues like this.

1: this sounds like feminism
2. feminism is evil
3. we won't be "cowed by feminists" (actual phrase used)
4. there's also probably some ulterior motive
5. we must reject this idea, anybody who is even vaguely associated, and double down on old translations.

So recently a website for my confession (Greek Orthodox) had an essay about translations of the Creed. Here's the issue: the original Greek of the Creed is gender neutral and the theology certainly is. For maybe 20 years we used a translation that was. About a decade ago we switched back to one that wasn't. The original is about humanity, not about men, so it makes sense to use a non-specific translation - so we would say for instance that Jesus Christ "became human" instead of "became man". Most of the other Orthodox groups used the old-fashioned translations with "men".

They also have a "free thrift" store thing - drop off and take stuff.

Now, my partner has a bike that needs some minor repair, they say they have a hangout and repair stuff and do gardening starting at noon every Sunday: not sure if we're social enough to actually go.

The art venue / maker place / I guess they repair and give out kids bikes and clothing too / that I live across from just started a community garden. It's cool, I guess, though I'm always too antisocial to actually hang out there.
