Interesting. I for one always felt that if I was called gringo I would essentially be told that I'm acting like a white american.

At least within my own family, if they wanted to say something that was more about being Americanized in general, they would just say 'you're American'

To me Gringo means white. Which is why I was so annoyed when I saw a "Mexican" bar here in the UK.....called Gringos.

@guerrillarain just to expand the topic, look up the words ‘gabacho’ and ‘güero’ which in the Bay Area (where I’m from) are more widely used in a derogatory way than ‘gringo’.

@guerrillarain In the Mexico I know it means specifically anyone from the US. I have seen Mexicans in the US use it to mean white people, though. I think mainland (lol) Mexico would say güero for white people (but for my privileged, lighter-skinned social group güero meant blonde). You'd be a gringa in Mexico but not a güera, you'd be negra.

Canadians and Europeans are not gringos in Mexico.

here in Brazil we use it more broadly but on most cases it is reffered as "english speaking white people from other countries" but it's not limited to that. Black North Americans are gringos too but so does white European people.

If it's negative or not heavily depends on context.

@ArtistMarciaX @guerrillarain I think in the DR we used it to refer to any US person even if they weren't white, but not like as an insult. I think the derogatory form of gringo is reserved for white gringos.

Then there's the popular "tu ere gringo ahora!" you tell people after they move to the US and start speaking spanglish a lot when they come visit.

And as someone who is Boricua....I can attest to that.
