I think the most frustrating thing about being in an abusive or toxic family when you're black is that there is always this reality of, "The outside world is virulently racist, so who else can you rely on?"

This is how abuse and toxicity permeates. When you cultivate a culture of silence, of deference for your elders, and fetishization of power, you foster abuse because how can people speak up? How can they resist? Your body isn't your own, it belongs your parents. You are the property of your family. So how do children stand a chance against abuse when they are constantly *told* that?
