I didn't wake up planning to rant about white people again today, but here I am.

And I'm not saying there *has* to be romance. I've enjoyed plenty of books without romance at all.

But like, I get so bothered when there's supposed to be a romance between two cishet characters and the girl protagonist is all "I'm afraid he's gonna beat me but I love him so much" and that's portrayed as romantic, or the guy can't stop staring at her boobs and stalking her and he doesn't know an actual thing about her and that is portrayed as romantic

Sometimes I wonder about how romance is portrayed in literature throughout cultures. Does the concept of romance vary from culture to culture?

I like to diversify my reading so that it's not the same white cishet American dudes, but like, very often the "romance" either:

(1) isn't romantic. It's creepy and borderline abusive; or
(2) isn't present at all. Characters are just lumped together because the writer said so.

Am I making sense? Is this a thing?

(Kinda the same boat, the love of my life isn't fat but he is quite heavy set while I'm really thin, but he also has horror stories of how people have interacted with his body, and it's kinda like... since when did minding your own business magically not a thing when you interact with fat people?)
