I will remember that to this day, because I called the hospital billing office and my insurance company to discuss her behavior. "She handled it the wrong way, but this is common practice." 💀

For those who don't know, the reason that they did this to me is because

I am young and healthy, and did not get any additional medical treatment the whole year (other than a covered checkup and a free flu shot), so I had a deductible that I never touched. (I have to spend $2500 before insurance starts covering extra, and was in the hospital because of a body fluke.)

She did not think that I could afford that $2500 and was afraid that I would skip out on the bill or be unable to pay the hospital anything afterwards, so she asked for a deposit before I could leave.

True fact. I do wonder how much the average person in the US understands that their healthcare is a literal nightmare scenario that left-of-centre political parties use to frighten voters. Cuz from the coverage the issue gets that exports beyond your borders I get the impression a lot of people don't.

Canada, and maybe? I'm really not sure how that works, but I feel like if you have a job lined up they can rush things through in that regard. I'd highly recommend it, at any rate, I can only imagine the expense having to pay for something like that yourself.
