I don't know what "hoisting" means and at this point I'm afraid to ask

I am getting a lot of programming answers to this and I want to clarify that I was talking about the, uh, meme usage of the word on Mastodon

@Gargron its a reference to the Shakespearean phrase "hoisted by your own petard"

in the meme form, its meaning is equivalent to the phrase "owned" i.e "you have been owned" ~= "you have been hoisted"

@staticsafe @Gargron Except much like "Luke, I am your father," he never actually said that. It's "Hoist with his own petar;"

polly @gracie

@rotatingskull @staticsafe @Gargron yep, "hoist" is already past tense; and "petar" is a fart gag
