Those are absolutely valid dreams, brought on by deprivation. Follow them : you deserve to live safe, warm and fed.

People tell you you don't have dreams because you only care about being safe warm and fed.

"To evoke magic is not only to provide an alternative regime of causal relations, but also to minimize attention to the methods and resources required to carry out a particular effect. Magic denies an accounting of what went into making something work, or that it required work at all." from the brilliant madeleine claire elish points.datasociety.net/dont-ca

Lovely soft evening light as I was leaving work today, making everything feel less harsh without obscuring and giving a warm glow to lighted windows. And seeing tall buildings standing out against the evening sky was a reminder to look up; which is an easy thing to forget in a big city.

So today I'm comfort-reading James H Schmitz's pulpy SF adventure stories. Schmitz was a writer at the end of the old pulp magazine tradition, notable for preferring competent women protagonists at a time when that was rare. His stuff's not entirely free of sexism and his storytelling can sometimes be a bit muddy, but if you're looking for old-fashioned breezy entertainment then he's well worth a look.
Here are a couple of his stories that I like and you can read for free:

why do I have to go to work why can't I just become a small cat

Since I was talking about Polari yesterday... has anyone else noticed how hard the Wikipedia article tries to make it less gay?

I used to think that I needed more happy people in my life to balance out my depression, but I've come to realize what I actually need are more KIND people. Not just kind to me. I need to see more people being good to each other. I think we all do.

#TIL that the term "scientist” was coined in honor of an amazing woman, Mary Somerville.

“He called Somerville a scientist, in part because ‘man of science’ seemed inappropriate for a woman, but more significantly because Somerville’s work was interdisciplinary.”

Very cool. #science

Your occasional reminder that we smashed the divine right of kings, and one day we'll smash capitalism, too.

Useful critique of that Johann Hari thing about depression that seems to be doing the rounds: stavvers.wordpress.com/2018/01

(tl;dr: Hari has form on lazy misuse of sources, and this is no exception.)

I know lore isn’t really the point of Diablo, but what kind of idiot literalist turns “Wisdom has departed the High Heavens” into a boss monster?

This fairytale expansion story is just... so beautiful, I'm crying.

The instructor has now been talking for approximately four million years and I have already learned that ITIL is very boring and I don’t care about it even a little bit.
