And this, from around 1790, is an interesting detail on presentation: “if in a long dish it is proper for a corner, if round, as a middle dish”. Later descriptions of 18th century meals tend to describe them as jumbled and excessive, so it’s worth setting against that an image of many dishes carefully arranged on a big table. I imagine corner dishes would be placed diagonally, to focus attention on the centre.

TIL “trifle” and “fool” have a common origin as a dish of thickened cream with sugar and spices that could be called by either term.

Soup is on. My hands are parts of the kitchen are stained with beetroot, like an unconvincing stage murder.

Pancakes filled and folded. Next: peel beetroot and celeriac for soup. Then I’m into the home stretch - just the fish and potatoes. (Should be carp but I couldn’t be bothered this year. Salmon with a nice cream-and-herb sauce.)

First pancake of the batch came out OK. This isn’t normal - something bad is clearly going to happen later.
