W is for whoami, which tells you your name, while X is, well, X, of dubious fame. Y is for yes, which makes an impression, and Z is for zcat, which handles compression. -- THE ABC'S OF UNIX"

I love fortune:
A is for awk, which runs like a snail, and B is for biff, which reads all your mail. C is for cc, as hackers recall, while D is for dd, the command that does all. E is for emacs, which rebinds your keys, and F is for fsck, which rebuilds your trees. G is for grep, a clever detective, while H is for halt, which may seem defective. I is for indent, which rarely amuses, and J is for join, which nobody uses. K is for kill, which makes you the boss, while
(By an astonishing coincidence, this newly-expressed desire by HR to see us comfortable in our retirement coincides with a strike ballot over plans to gut the pension scheme.)
HR have invited us to a pensions presentation where we can learn "how to avoid working until you are 70 years old". I personally hope to avoid working for longer than that, but presumably they think retirement will make it easier.
Once again, I've bought a Mario game on the basis of rapturous reviews only to remember I don't actually like platform games very much.
#TheOnlyThingWeLearnFromHistory
a week or so ago I wrote a mail to a podcast I like, telling them I think they're great.
In their latest episode they mentioned that they were very happy to have received a fan mail. Like 1 fan mail.
I thought my message would just be one of many.
So anyway, if you can, tell creators you like that you like what they do, they might not hear it as much as you'd think. :)
#InnovationAward to the Indo-Mexican burrito joint off the Tottenham Court Road offering "samosas" made with sliced white bread in a sandwich toaster.
Fire alarm at work and for one glorious moment I thought it was Friday, as that's the day they test the system.
Because I needed it recently, a reminder:
It's ok to turn off push notifications from apps. It's ok to unsubscribe from email lists. It's ok to unfollow. Your attention is yours to give.
That story in "Tales from Moominvalley" where they accidentally wake from hibernation in midwinter, hear people talking about Christmas, and think it must be some kind of terrible beast to be placated.
"Creating evidence of doing something is not the same as doing something." - Sara Ahmed, and also my career in IT.

I don't know whether it is because I'm getting older or because the news is getting worse but I find myself crying a lot about anti-fascist protesters around the world because I am so grateful; they seem so alone and have to fight the state and fascists together
Reminder for today: It's okay to have limits. It's healthy to set boundaries. You don't need to take on other people's stuff, and you don't need to give your energy away and get nothing in return.
Don't cut off your branches and give them to people/causes who will only toss them aside. It takes time for branches to grow back, and you need them to live. It's OK to keep your branches for yourself.
Going to get my fourteen year old nephew The Exploits of Englebrecht for Xmas, I think. Because I’m trying slightly too hard to be the Cool One and because I read my would-otherwise-be-collectible-now copy to bits when I was about that age. http://www.savoy.abel.co.uk/HTML/engelb.html
I wrote a piece called "The Gentle Verb" about designing story for games for the Peabody Essex Museum http://playtime.pem.org/the-gentle-verb-an-essay/
I don't cope well with Christmas so if anybody has something ridiculous I can distract myself with lemme know
