Hello followers of my main account! This is my alt for tabletop RPG stuff, if that’s something you’re interested in.

All of which is to say: I narrow my eyes a little when I see someone say "hey everybody, punish this person, they broke the rules!". It makes me wonder what the person speaking up did beforehand that led up to that moment.

“You understand that C has been tormenting my child for a year and a half specifically to provoke him into breaking your rules, and you’ve done nothing about it?” I asked the principal.

”Your child was the one breaking the rules,” the principal said.

“So verbal abuse isn’t against the rules?”

“Only if we hear it.”

I pulled him out of the school that day.

It came to a head at recess. The playground was graveled, and C was throwing rocks at M, aimed carefully to /just/ miss. M got fed up and tossed a rock back. C caught it in his bare hand, and then yelled, “M’s throwing rocks at me!”

Despite half the class telling the teacher that C had been throwing rocks, M was the one who ended up in the principal’s office.

And for the other students - this was 3rd and 4th grade - it was a sideshow in their boring classes. How far could C push M before M got mad and the teacher would have to stop the class?

The teacher refused to move M and C apart until I intervened. Then C would find excuses to come over to M's desk and continue to torment him, or mess with M's backpack or lunch, or spread rumors about him.

The principal refused to move C and M into separate classes. "C hasn't done anything wrong. He shouldn't be punished. And if I move M he'll just get into fights in his new class."

You know the story. My kid (M) would inevitably get fed up and try to push C away. And C would shout, "M pushed me!" and I'd get a call because M was in trouble for touching another student.

C never got in trouble. He knew where the edges were. He knew how to not get caught. He knew that if the teacher didn't /hear/ the abuse he was slinging, it didn't count.

One of the other students in his class, C, decided to target my kid. He knew just how to do it, too. He'd verbally abuse my kid all day - just out of earshot of the teacher. Constant belittling and slurs and abuse. And he'd /almost/ touch my kid - fingers millimeters away, scooting his chair as close as he could, et cetera.

When the kid was younger, he went to a school with a zero-tolerance touching policy. Not bad touching or violent touching, /any/ touching. Tap a kid on the shoulder, get punished. Bump someone in line, get punished. (This was the same school that forbade clothes with text, symbols, or more than one color because They Could Be Gang Symbols.)

There can never be a complete and undisputable list of things that should have CWs and that's okay. It's more important to work out ways to be ok to each other.
