I gave a talk a couple weeks ago about trying to maintain an online community's health under the massive stress of all the shit that's been going on in the US and the world the last couple years.
It's focused on MetaFilter because that's what I know best, but a lot of it is about stuff that generalizes elsewhere, both online and off, in terms of how folks can cope together with all this stuff.

I'm starting to get as bored with "based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft" in game ads as I am with "tough as nails", "roguelike", and "zombies".

"procedurally-generated" here in the broadest possible understanding (i.e., produced according to a system of rules to fit a constraint)—the artifacts themselves aren't necessarily computer-generated in the strictest sense.
it's becoming very clear that it's a privilege to have the literacy and time needed to distinguish between meaningful, genuine content and spam/troll trash—a privilege being systematically denied to some people for political reasons

...or, as it turns out, I can just say “fuck it” and order a reconditioned PC with last year’s midrange spec for about the price of a console. Which is annoying, but much better than the alternatives.
My fscking PC has taken to hanging about five minutes after it boots - I think because some part of a Windows update is interacting badly with my rather old hardware.
This is demoralising because I was supposed to be working from home tomorrow morning and because now I have to buy a new PC, and if you sometimes like to play games then buying a new PC involves burning fistfuls of money while immersing yourself in endless bullshit.
The office is empty and you're tired so it must be late but you don't know the exact time - the clock on your desktop just says "Middle of week". You take a moment to stretch and go back to the code. What were you looking for again? Maybe if you can trace through this nest of loops and exit conditions... but it's hard to concentrate. Your eyes keep flicking back to the left margin, where you realise the first letters of each line make a sentence...
