@storytam Though I can remember people doing the same when I was at school in the UK, back when college was free. Neoliberalism increases the pressure but there’s so little you can control in a college application that people are naturally going to get superstitious about the few choices they have.

@KitRedgrave Stu Horvath once summed up fandom as “the root of suffering is attachment”. The fact that I believe this and will still fight over Utena only goes to prove it, I think.

@thewaether I think it’s a question of what you’d have to give up to achieve the effect - but as you say, that’s what experimentation is for.

@thewaether My first thought was “Zu: Warriors of the Magic Mountain”, which demonstrates the strengths and weaknesses of the approach. But a slow-build suspense movie could have the same kind of escalating structure.

@thewaether How does that fit with the classic context-ACTION-result cycle of an action movie, say?

@hollyamory Absolutely not too much to ask. Did sociolinguistics with dialect and folklore study? That might skew the whole field in a conservative direction.

@Lapis My parents are both academics, which gave me a rather different impression growing up. Lots of academic politics at the dinner table.
