Made it down to the picket line for the first time this morning, so of course it’s snowing.

@repeatedvs Someone described it as “the Bay Area polyamory meetup”, which is hard to argue with.

Heading home through the ripped back sides of the city, in a beautiful evening light. I wish I could capture it but a moving bus isn’t good for photography.

@ghost_bird storytime!

i went to a single-sex high school that went coed my senior year. in my senior year i was president of the Tech Club. we played Rock Band, built computers for charity auctions, and made a yearly trip to the science museum.

i IMMEDIATELY noticed these fucking 13-year-old boys trying to take charge. i kept having to tell them (politely) to back off

i recently got a newsletter email from my high school that featured the tech club. yeah, it's all boys now.

Disappointed to see the principal of St Hilda’s - a women-only college until 2008 -is a man now, though. This is what happens when you let men in, and a major reason the move was resisted for so long.

(My general instinct is to cut off the past and let it fall away, but people deserve to be remembered.)

Heading back from Oxford, where I’ve been to a memorial for Mary Moore who died late last year.
She was (successively) a senior diplomat, a novelist and writer for radio and TV, and principal of St Hilda’s College - I remember her as a friend of the family from when I was small.
The tributes all described her as elegant, gracious, warm, and kind, with excellent people skills, which matches what I remember.

@senemura I’ve not done dishwashing or warehouse work but I have played D&D, so it works pretty well for me.

Today I realized that I cannot expect people on the Internet to have heard of the Geek Social Fallacies any more.

The Geek Social Fallacies are five things that geeks often believe about How Socializing Should Work, that cause a lot of conflict. I've found them to be pretty useful as a way to put a handle on certain concepts, and maybe even avoid going into bad situations.

(Looking at them in 2017, I find myself wondering how many of the GSFs the design of most social networks is running straight into...)

me, whenever someone I haven't spoken to in ages gets in touch out of the blue: this is utterly delightful, and I wish this sort of thing happened more!

me, whenever I'm thinking about talking to someone I haven't spoken to in ages: they don't remember me, they would hate me if they remembered me, this intrusion into their lives would definitely be unwelcome

Made it back from the supermarket. Still don’t have much energy, but it’s definitely returning. Which is good, because tomorrow I have to head down to Oxford for a memorial service. (An old friend of the family and, among other things, former principal of St Hilda’s College.)

About to head out to the supermarket in what will be my longest excursion since Tuesday, when I came down with this stupid cold.

Alan Moore isn’t always holding up well these days, but Top 10 is still pretty good.
