why do we need toot searching
@kellycrow I need it because I ask questions, people give me answers, and then after even a day or two they get snowed under by further communications
why _wouldn't_ you want to search toots? seems an odd objection to make
@kara harassment risk, mostly. i can see the appeal in searching yours and only your toots, that'd be helpful to me
but people ask for public searching and i wouldnt want to be indexed into that
@kellycrow that is a good point. fuck knows there's enough assholes out there who do nothing but grep for (say) Richard Dawkins so they can pop up out of nowhere to defend their god
I feel like the real solution to this problem isn't to prevent searching (like, why would you not want an archive of text to be searchable) but mechanisms to prevent unsolicited communication
@kellycrow @kara Are public toot searches on the roadmap now? I thought it was just your own toots and favs.
@kellycrow @kara It’s certainly something to watch for - and speak to the devs about - but it seems to me that what we now have was made with safety in mind, and I think that’s a good sign.
@ghost_bird @kara ive heard a lot of concerns about the security of the coding used for the searching though that worries me
@kellycrow @kara How vulnerable would you be on an instance that didn’t index toots, I wonder?
@ghost_bird @kara not yet at least but toot searches period never were either and things have to change to suit the needs of the majority of the userbase
