Somebody was trying to talk about avocado but said arvo instead of avo and I am now imagining a whole afternoon on toast. :)

It's so weird to me when British people add r's to things like this. Somebody once thought I was saying Gomers when I was saying Gomez.

But to me the vowel sounds are different, too, in "afternoon" and "avocado." Maybe this isn't so in British English? Or maybe the person just used "arvo" because it was more familiar to them than "avo"?

@hollyamory I can’t think of any British accents that would put a long “a” in avocado, but there are so many to choose from. I’m pretty sure “arvo” is Australian, though.

@ghost_bird
It is, yes. Shortening avocado that way is also something I'd previously only seen from Australians. Don't know if it's an affectation in this use or if there is someone going to a local-to-me café who's Australian. :)
