It's not entirely separable from social history--or social present, for that matter. :)
But it's about how race, gender, class, geography, all those sociological factors affect someone's vocabulary, accent, grammar, everything about the language they use and how it's perceived by others.
It's the part of linguistics that's most immediately interesting to me.
