Got some particularly onerous chores to do today.

But at least I finally wrote up what the beginning of the semester has been like for me (hollymath.dreamwidth.org/2018/). A lot of stuff that was in my head is now safely stored in words on a page and can't bug me quite so much any more. :)

@hollyamory Varieties of English sounds really interesting, though I don't know what a linguistic approach (as opposed to, say, social history) would be like.

It's not entirely separable from social history--or social present, for that matter. :)

But it's about how race, gender, class, geography, all those sociological factors affect someone's vocabulary, accent, grammar, everything about the language they use and how it's perceived by others.

It's the part of linguistics that's most immediately interesting to me.
