If you can, you should find a good translation of Aristophanes's plays. (Ἀριστοφάνης, but pronounced "er ih STOFF an eez" in English.) He wrote in Athens in the late 5th and early 4th century BC, and is still one of the best comic writers of the Western world.
Recommendations:
"Lysistrata" is a comedy about women stopping a war by holing up and refusing to have sex.
"The Frogs" satirizes other playwrights.
"The Clouds": escapist entertainment or allegory? who knows? it's still funny.
@noelle (Although now I think, I realise I had The Clouds confused with The Birds. The Birds is the one I like and I need to do some rereading.)
