So today I'm comfort-reading James H Schmitz's pulpy SF adventure stories. Schmitz was a writer at the end of the old pulp magazine tradition, notable for preferring competent women protagonists at a time when that was rare. His stuff's not entirely free of sexism and his storytelling can sometimes be a bit muddy, but if you're looking for old-fashioned breezy entertainment then he's well worth a look.
