Hey, all, now that maly.io is closed to new accounts for the time being, I need a similarly free-speech-oriented Mastodon instance to recommend to friends and colleagues.
Doesn't need to be particularly Anglophone-centric, but should have an English-speaking admin in case of issues.
@HedgeMage what do you consider free speech?
@fxck That server admins will never do undisclosed bans/silencing/defederation, and only do server-wide bans/defederation when necessary for server operation, security, or similar extremes (not for content reasons). Users are left to block/mute at will, and follow whomever they want.
@HedgeMage and what is the justification for that policy? if a server is full of trolls and not being moderated effectively, why shouldn't admins step in?
relying on individual users to filter their own content, thus forcing them to regularly see and engage content that is offensive or harmful to them is the reason people prefer this to twitter.
@fxck I don't think I should have to justify personal preference, but if you're curious why I have that preference...
Not everyone agrees on what is trolling/inappropriate/offensive/harmful. Many people, myself included, sought alternatives to e.g. Twitter/Facebook because we're quite tired of the self-censorship and resulting monoculture that has resulted from people who don't share the site owners' opinions getting banned or having their content removed.
@HedgeMage do you think nazis are acceptable and should be entitled to a platform?
@HedgeMage are you aware that appeals to free speech are in the Stormfront forum invasion instructions?
stormfront is a nazi forum. it's an explicit strategy of nazis to deny that they are nazis and claim that they have a right to harass people and "debate" whether or not marginalised groups deserve human rights.
