it is interesting how, when presented with a new thing to invent a word for, US English often tends to go with something scientific, or professional-sounding, something that sounds complex and impressive. UK English often instead goes for a plain, dumbed-down, silly term

e.g.

T.V. (sciency acronym) vs telly (friendly nickname)

elevator (technical, 4 syllables) vs lift (extremely plain)

apartment (4 syllables) vs flat (same as above)
