It's the online equivalent of Black Friday, and was kind of meant to boost online shopping sales.

There's also Small Business Saturday, whereby all the indie shops promote their wares, which was kind of a tactic to get people to spend more money supporting local and/or smaller shops instead of going to box stores like Walmart.
