Is the existence of the Kardashev scale a Checkhov's gun? Are we just destined to wreck a solar system now that the idea's out of the bottle? More importantly, who names these things? It sounds like I'm talking about Star Trek here.

@UberActivist @unascribed @chr I live on coffee what even is cola

Wait, no, it's that rum mixer. I know what this is.

@chr Not just numbers! Natural numbers. Counting numbers. They thought if you couldn't reduce it to a pure simplicity, you didn't sufficiently understand it. Yeah, got really culty.

Pythagorus was also a pretty rad story. Word has it one of his students proved the existence of irrational numbers, and turned up very suspiciously dead the next day.

Me: Here's some hemlock but I hope you choke on it before it can kill you

@chr @HTHR Socrates was an insufferable person to talk to though. We probably wouldn't be friends.

More likely:
SOCRATES: Am I not a philosopher? Do I not, therefore, do what I want?

The amazing thing is, the Webโ„ข has been broken for a while. Its creators have written extensively on this, and rather than implement most of the suggestions, we've gotten very good at hiding the problems.

@unascribed *foams at mouth* FOR THE LAST TIME, MY USER DOES NOT WANT A CHECK FROM AN AFRICAN PRINCE

@unascribed My fans would spin up too if I had to file messages into your spam folder

@unascribed as soon as I figure out the name and layout of the sctm format, inner corners are going away. ChiselTeam doesn't use it, so it's a little hard to find examples.

I don't know why I like picking on checkers so much. Maybe because they're so hard to use already, I'm not hurting as much.

Howdy, I'm the sher-

Finding a CPU Design Bug in the Xbox 360

randomascii.wordpress.com/2018

<<The recent reveal of Meltdown and Spectre reminded me of the time I found a related design bug in the Xbox 360 CPU โ€“ a newly added instruction whose mere existence was dangerous.>>

So recently in discussion, @lindar pitched an idea I really liked. Here it is, with an addition by me, so it's not hidden in threads. Please share and use if you like it.

The idea is that interacting with other folks' selfies can be somewhat fraught because you don't know where their boundaries are. And asking, "Can I compliment your appearance?" sort of short-circuits consent.

So when you post a , add tags:
โ€ข nocom (no comments/compliments)
โ€ข okcom (comments/compliments OK)
โ€ข rqcom (comments/compliments requested)

Also, if you want to specify the difference, you could replace -com with -flirt and/or use them in combination like [rqcom, noflirt].
