today i told my female students that i plan to invite them to some women in tech events and between class and the event, we could hang out at a bar. they all are super in to it and im excited about it :D

god i think my company might be bullshit

they do career coaching , where the coach tells you to then "buy" our next two products: an orientation course and a 12 month certified web dev course. except the state will pay for it.

and in their brochure, they claim that there is a professionally made curriculum from industry experts with input from the top companies on their needs, and some other bullshit.

also at least the company is fucking with the jobcenter while actually trying to do something good for the students, so it's not like pure evil. but it's definitely exaggerated

so in response to my really hard mastodon experiences this last week, i decided that im going to change how i interact with the site. i really only want to be following people i am friends with and who i can feel more trust towards than strangers. i still want to post because it's an important outlet for me, but i will make my account private and also unfollow some people. im still open to being followed but i dont want to have my threads as discussion points for people who i don't really know or trust.

@eribloodlust i just will think about it a lot today, taking a long break from mastodon and particularly my filter bubble here. its so hard for me to walk away from things like this, but at a point i have to protect myself. i use block, mute, filters, etc, but i learned yesterday that i also want the community to be responsible for each other and be considerate that this stuff is triggering, & since i dont see that changing here, i think i will just go.

@eribloodlust im not a stranger to online harassment even from within my scenes, but im trying to avoid it when it comes up.

i just dont trust that in the masto community around me (who are not friends but just people on social media) that i will be generally safe from triggering content, nor from harassment when i ask people to use the tools we have designed for the purpose of saving us from triggers and emotional burnout.

@eribloodlust furthermore when i dm asked someone for cwing an announcement, they posted my handle publicly in retaliation and some people came my way to harass me last night. thats part of why i stepped away. im not naming names cuz thats not how i play. i send a dm because i wanted to keep it private cuz fuck that call out culture and harassment.

i have actually had better experieces from my facebook *friends* about cw suicide/murder announcements (trans women in the usa dying, not all of us want to know right when it happens).

yes ppl need to be able to reach out to community! but a cw just means that people who actually want to be part of that will be, and others can protect themselves

i know this is extreme but I'm very strongly considering to leave mastodon over the cw issues. that sucks for me because it was that masto was the only social media i felt ok using. but i cant trust my mostly white euroqueer filter bubble after this. i see peope who demand cw of politics of minoroties or trump news but argue they shouldnt have to hide their grief when they suffer...

i feel like i cant and wont use masto today, because theres so much neglect for cws regarding a super heavy topic, that its not comfortable for me. im not the only one. we use this platform because these tools are available. i know for me, having the option to only open these posts if i can handle it is something that would make me able to use masto right now...

its fucking heavy that the lunchtime conversation at work, after working on software development, is about the war in syria and in palestine, the situations in north africa, how egypt and other countries are hired by europe to police the border... but for me i think its important to hear and important to hear from the people who lived it.

so many of these people are here because they were pro-democracy demonstrators against military dictatorships. they are young people who have such high concern for human rights and for fair government, and i'ts so good to hear their perspectives, as a person from the USA and europe.

So many of my students come from ISIS controlled villages in Syria, or who were policail activists who protestsed Assad and who lost half of their entire families in the war, who were forced to fight for the Assad regime, who went to prison for demonstrating for democracy...

The first thing they all tell me about the war is that the USA created ISIS, created al Queda, and coopted the Arab Spring and the result of their intervention has been utter chaos with no smooth transition of power away from these dictators.

Just wanted to remind y'all that the USA created ISIS and "fighting ISIS" is bullshit empty rhetoric so everything you heard is a lie.
