expectation of skill, or resources to learn skills needed to assemble such technology. theres a subtle expectation of capitalism in that. if poor people want something cheaper, they have to make up the cost with their labour. theres the problematic DIY expectation that everyone can and should be able to be self sufficient , which ignores the realities of ability, privilege, and time cost. i want to see privacy and mutual aid, particularly since privacy community is quite privileged! i am really unimpressed with this project's use of the language of solidarity while it seems to ignore the real meaning of "for the people"

thread 2/? librem 5 phone critique ('privacy' smartphone, runs open source os)

in san francisco, there is landlord funded fake grassroots misinformation campaign that it trying to persuade people that building luxury condos that cost 5600 for a one bedroom unit per month is going to create units and solve the housing crisis. to me, that is "housing for the people" in the same way this is a phone "for the people"...

now, one might say that "poor people can buy the kit for 300 euros and assemble it themselves!"

thanks... so still, 300 euros is price prohibitive for many people, especially off contract. and theres an even more problematic expectation there.

oops i didnt make my thread a real thread

thread 1/? librem 5 phone critique ('privacy' smartphone, runs open source os)

their marketing pitch is: "by the people, for the people". that's the pitch for a phone that costs 600 euros... this project, because of the cost, doesnt seem to be trying to solve the problem of security for everyone, since we know that is an issue that disproportionately impacts people with low cost cell phones. the solution to their problem isnt an alternative that is out of their price range. i find it so wrong to use "for the people" to describe this device. it sounds like an appropriation of socialist language in order to sell something to the privacy-minded middle class +

"holdening" (as in "james holden" of "the expanse") means when a morally elitist white male in a sci fi who feels entitled to leadership acts like he has the final say in group decision making. even if his morals swing completely 180 degrees, he's going to justify being right on either side.

oh i just realized, i did 1000 toots :D dope!

i read that the FBI is using machine learning on trans YouTubers in order to make facial recognition software work through someone's transition...

this terrifies me.

google bro: "how do you capture the moment, while still being part of the moment?"
me: "no"
"we invented an entirely new type of camera"
"no"
"google clips"
"noooo its a body cam fuck you google FUCK YOU"

actual conversation between me and my computer

new google headphones will be available for 159 DAUGHTERS! thats what he said folks. one per every 159 daughters. what does google need so many daughters for? training their daughter ai?

machine learning for volumes and auto adjusting based on your habits through time or around ambient noise... r u fucking kidding me?

watching a synopsis of the google event today, and totally horrified. "transition from a mobile world to an ai world", and google is going hard in the ai personal assistant game. i cant really believe that so many people want always on, highly advanced voice recognition... :/
