im really proud of my i3 keybindings anyway.

resize mode never felt right to me, but hotkey resizing is helpful. so i remapped super with + and - to modify height, and super with [ and ] to modify the width.

considering that i got rid of the window name bar and cant vertical resize windows with the mouse, having resize hotkeys that work for me is really handy.
