UBER IS GONE FROM LONDON
"Transport for London said that it had rejected the US cab hailing app’s application to renew its licence because “Uber’s approach and conduct demonstrate a lack of corporate responsibility""
3 weeks then bye :) deliveroo next pls London
We're here
We're queer
Let's toot about it
I'm gay.
Amsterdam, I love you, but do you have a fucking vendetta against coffee cups.
I have been served lattes, teas, filter coffee IN GLASSES ALL WEEKEND.
Get your shit together, Amsterdam. I WANT CUPS WITH HANDLES.
Serious question, if I uploaded some #Rust code later, would anyone be down for giving me feedback/direction?
I've done Rust for about a month now, and I'm at the point where I'm terrified I've got really bad habits about solving problems.
For reference, I'm currently trying to write a library that can send a query with a PrestoDB cluster and retrieve a vector of vectors - like a data.frame in R, for later use. Maybe save it, not sure yet.
coding woes, Afficher plus

Spoiler, the regex part is fine, but custom deserializing a JSON is still FUCKING PAINFUL.
(I am fairly confident someone is going to give me shit over the "R GC IS MAGIC AND NO ONE KNOWS" take.
I already know about
https://stat.ethz.ch/R-manual/R-devel/library/base/html/Memory-limits.html
and stuff, the theory all works out and I assume Hadley had looked at it and stuff.
I just don't care, I tried getting R to melt a 200,000 column data.frame and it died. Repeatedly. While using chunk methods and calling gc() when appropriate. I then rewrote it in Rust and it took ~2 hours but it was fine. )
R also wouldn't give me shit about types because it has literally no type safety.
And occasionally crashes because literally no one knows how the GC works.
I've actually started to think the GC is magic in R. I can't find any documentation on it, and no one ever seems to question it.
"Oh just use more RAM"
Right, but, why?
"MORE RAM FOR THE GARBAGE COLLECTOR GODS"
I know, I'll implement something I have in R in Rust, I'm sure it'll be fine.
[a day passes]
I miss R. R wouldn't give me this shit. ALL I'M TRYING TO DO IS A SQL QUERY.
"I know, I can solve this problem with regex"
The final words before a project ramps up in difficulty like dark souls
This project has taught me a few things already.
one of them being "If a team of people are paid full time to do something, do not imagine you can setup a comparable one in two days of your holiday'
hey past eden, why don't you fuck off.
this sounded like a good idea when I started, and now I'm 150 lines into something that vaguely starts and I am so done.
current state:
- running a local version of presto using docker
- can POST a query to it using Rust!Hyper
- can roughly deserialize the initial response
- have implemented a custom deserialize for the URL response so that I can chain along the next URL provided
next steps:
- implementing a 'future' or an iterable form of the chained url so I can spider along the json replies
- chaining together a vector-like reply and parsing it back
- somehow getting types to work
hey eden I've got a great holiday idea.
why don't you try and implement a connector for prestodb in rust.
doesn't that sound *fun*
"If pilots make good on the threat, they will refuse do anything outside their contractual obligations, such as turning up early or answering phone calls on days off"
I, uh. Wtf Capitalism. Threatening to fulfil your obligations shouldn't be a possible threat.
Wouldn't that be a wonderful national protest for worker's rights. "Today we will only fulfil our contracts, to the letter". Companies would collapse.
"Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary has escalated the airline’s dispute with pilots, saying they do not have a “difficult job” and claiming he can force them to give up a week of leave"
Capitalist leaders are morally corrupt and think their workers' jobs are easy, more at 11.
The Peter Mannion bit is the important bit, ofc.
(It's Cabin Pressure, it's got Benedict Cumberbatch and Alan Davies too! It's amazing)
I think the nice thing about this holiday has been the amount of time just.. to process/think through things?
I have a bunch of notes in my notebook of
"Things I want/need to do" ranging from "Tell my housemate about a radio show I remembered with Peter Mannion in it" to "What to tell my counsellor when I see him".
It's a nootropic from the dark web called Brazilian Buddah. Chick was in the middle of deliverin' a quarterly earnings report, suddenly she's rollin' out the door on an electric unicycle.
