a thing i'm learning trying to pitch mastodon to friends: you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it follow anyone or have any meaningful interactions
i feel like so many people have gotten so used to having content just laid out in front of them they've forgotten what it was like to actually go out and make internet friends before the term "social media" was a thing
i don't know that there's a solution here and tbh I'm not sure I want there to be one? i frankly love the level of interaction here and it's frustrating to see people complaining about self-inflicted problems but you can't force someone to interact

@ebeth I think a lot of that is on us as a community. I would say there's always the #introductions tag, and really, we should all pick up and follow more, and invite people in

@Sailorplutoid
i definitely agree/often boost & follow people from #introductions
this particular post is more about friends who sign up, never post, and then leave. or they post one thing with no hashtag and ignore people replying to them and then leave. we as a community can't reach people that aren't willing to meet us halfway by being present
there's not really anything to be done about it imo, it's just frustrating when people decide they don't like the platform just based on signing up and passively reading the local/federated timeline
