There's a free speech maximalist position on Mastodon that goes something like this: the promise of federation is that a user on any instance can communicate with a user on any other instance. Instance blocks break this promise, and should therefore only be used in extreme cases such as illegal content or spam.

I want to point out that this position views federated social networks as *only a performance optimization* of a centralized social network. 1/?

Websites that always use iPhones/Macs in their mockups when ~80% of the world uses Androids/PCs is maybe a good metaphor for how we in the tech industry tend to design products that serve the privileged few (like ourselves) who can afford such luxury items

like... Google is clearly a paperclip maximizer whose fitness function is "organize all the world's information" instead of "organize all the world's information without turning the planet into a surveillance-capitalism hellscape"
