"More and more people are waking up to a world driven by Silicon Valley software companies and thinking: is this really better?"
m.signalvnoise.com/silicon-val

This is quite a good article for Wired, which is usually notorious for breathless enthusiasm for any capitalistic crap gushing from Sillycon valley "rockstars".

The value which these well known companies and their dubious CEOs provide is actually wafer thin, and is more about holding back or preventing change than enabling it. Other systems exist operating within a very different economic mode, and maybe in hindsight 2017 will have been a turning point.

A friend once pointed out to me what a marketing coup the term "identity theft" was for the banks.

There is no such thing as identity theft. There is only companies' opening accounts in the wrong people's names. The culprits are companies who do an inadequate job of making sure their customers are who they say they are.

And yet the cost of this incompetence is borne almost entirely by someone who had no direct involvement in the actual crime.

RT @VodkaAuntTBH@twitter.com: Listen up you nerd-ass manchildren: if you can get mad at people for referring to Aragorn’s reforged sword as Narsil when its new identity is actually Andúril, you can absolutely refer to someone by their correct pronouns, regardless of if you knew them by other pronouns before

my wife just read a thing that says scientists measured elephants' responses to stimulus, and the relative "same" part of their brains lit up looking at humans, as does in humans when we see puppies

Is that any service which lists changesets with the "review_requested" tag, and don't have any comments?

It would be a good way to find things to review, and also for the community to measure how good we are at giving reviews. It's good to help new mappers!

Almost time to go away travelling for about a week. You know what that means? Time to put 10 new on my ereader. Just in case.
