I would also love to have/make an app which tells you what river you're beside and how that eventually flows into the sea/ocean. It's a type of distance that's not as the crow flies, but as the river flows.

The Rhône flows into the sea at the Mediterranean Sea. Let's give that a score of 1. The Saône flows into the Rhône, so that's a score of 2. The Doubs flows into it, giving a score of 3. Using only named waterways, I wonder what's the highest scoring thing?

(This is sorta related to Strahler number maybe. I could probably figure this out from )

@phryk @robjloranger FYI in mercator projection, the Y value can be infinite, since it cannot show the north/south pole. SO there is no max for Y.

Often when drawing maps, people set the min/max latitude at 85.0511 °N (& S). This makes the "world" a square. ( does this on osm.org).

You could do that, and work with those percentages?

@phryk @robjloranger Main IRC channels aren't on Freenode, but on OFTC. Try the channel on OFTC

"Please complain more about slow programs. Its 2016. We carry supercomputers in our pockets. Its simply not ok for apps to be sluggish."

Reminder: instances hosted by people countries with anti-Nazi laws are legally obligated to ban Nazis. If you want to be sure you're in a Nazi-free zone, let that guide your instance choice.

TIL if you violate the license of Linux, you permanently lose the right to distribute it with no way to recover those rights even if you stop infringing.

This is because Linux famously left out the "or later version" clause in their GPLv2, and it has thousands of copyright holders so it can never change. (GPLv3 doesn't have this problem.)

@catonano Doesn't spatialite (& qgis) have a different data model than ? There are other, popular, editors beside JOSM ;). There are many mobile editors, like Vespucci & OSMAnd.

I think one concern is automated/mechanical edits/imports. They should not be too easy, because imports are difficult to get right.

Dear LazyWeb. Is there a new modern replacement for , the graphing programme? Something everyone uses?

@chebe it's the idea that everything will be solved when people rise up. Which is sorta true, but ignores that there can be bad ways for people to rise up

@chebe because the last time there was a hard border it totally brought about Irish unification

RT @web_goddess@twitter.com: Read a comment this morning stating that culture is 80% male and had to laugh. Only if you discount the millions of sewing, knitting, weaving, and more. But oh right, they're just "." That artificial distinction enrages me. 😡

@charlag @aredridel you mean machen translation? There is apertium en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aperti

I've only briefly used it. It's not "machine learning" /"AI" etc so I dunno how good it is. I think you can just edit files to teach it things.

No one needs to starve. No one needs to freeze. No one needs to die. There is enough for everyone. More empty homes than all the people without them, more food than grocers can even sell. The labor and the materials to end scarcity exist now. It is not a far-off dream. We can end scarcity in this life.
