@cadey define harrased?
If text search is ever implemented, it should be limited to your home timeline/mentions only. Lack of full-text search on general content is intentional, due to negative social dynamics of it in other networks

@vhf are you aware that mastodon deliberately does not have full text search, because it makes individuals talking about topics immediately in a "public space" on those keywords, and leads directly to harassment? That's why only hashtags are searches: they're opt-in, not automatic or opt-out.
Jusy an FYI that if you continue to grow this search engine, you're going to create a LOT of friction and ill will against you in the community. People are already contemplating domain blocks.
petition to defederate every instance with "tech" in its domain
lmao ok but what does search even gain you? finding those dank dril tweets you reflexively use in a need to stay relevant in a world ever ahead of you?
calm down. you don't need to live in the past. go make real features
is search nice? yeah I guess but I literally see no real use for it that couldn't be solved by restricting it to searchable user timeline pages instead of keyword searches, which, well, you know how that goes, and so does piers morgan, who searches his name every 4.2 seconds on Twitter
Design psychology is like watered down social engineering/psyopps, teaching the real thing would have problematised the entire design discipline too much tbh.
"these are tools facist states use to control their populace maybe they'd be useful for doing marketing" is difficult to swallow so we wrap it in sugar and call it design.
Things I really wish my design degree had given me less of: boring design psycology.
Things I wish it had taught more: actual sociology and STS, activley useful dark ui/social engineering psych, so I can work better against it
(both of these things I'm pretty well self taught at by now tbh)
@AlexandriaYandere be a great name for an instance tbh. Drama.zone
@AlexandriaYandere morning, welcome to the dramazone
that's without even using proper social tools like community pressure, governance models with instance consensus to block/take broader action against bad actors(just saying, unauthorised access of a computer system is literally a US-crime? which is what non-opt-out full text search is. We don't need to techfix everything)
can we get rid of it completley? no.
Can we make it so repeated scrapes from IP addresses that don't reverse DNS to a non-blocked instance receive a 403? yes. It's even standards compliant. And that raises the cost of bad-actor search massivley(ipv6 not withstanding).
(look I'm just putting it out there, federation doesn't have to mean that everything is public all the time. GNU social federation does though. Crypto to that level would add a lot of overhead but lots of great people (briar) are working on protocols to support it. It's not federation, it's the white dudes who wrote the GNU social spec.
masto is a hack on top of that, and mostly a social/branding/ui hack at that. And there's no reason we can't use the social/etc hacks we're already making to make non-opt-out full text search(a feature with few desirable use cases) unwelcome, for example.
.@Irick @oceangrunge but also like, social norms can make them _harder_ to access. It's not a on/off thing, it's "I've got to use a hacky comand line utility to do full text search on instances because the good UI tools are respectful" vs "this site with decent ui and advanced search options won't respect people opting out". Sure, it's never going to be as hard as possible with the current federation setup, but we can make it harder, and at the end of the day, _all_ security is just making stuff harder.
Is there a way for an instance/person to opt out of https://cler.ical.ist/ @vhf? Would you be open to implementing one(maybe people could chose to federate to a search-instance? and would @Alda be open to implementing that for witches.town? I really like the feature where people can't search for a word like "nazi" or "trans" to pile on or stalk?
