@distelfliege @tether yeah, Kraft mac and cheese was one of the luxuries I bought from the American store when I felt homesick in Copenhagen. That and root beer.
I hadn't thought of it as a race thing until I read that article, I knew baked mac and cheese as a BBQ side but didn't think about it any deeper than that. But of course everything in this country ties back to slavery eventually, I shouldn't be surprised.
@distelfliege @tether @mcmoots my spouse and I used to make it from scratch all the time, but we didn’t bother with the baking stage. But I grew up with the boxed stuff, and you can get versions that are with real cheese that are also tasty.

@distelfliege @tether I mean that's part of it. And of course that has a life of its own - I was raised on stovetop mac and cheese with melty Velveeta chunks, so that's still my go-to comfort food method. (Sometimes I go one better on my childhood by putting melty Velveeta chunks into the sauce created by the orange powder. 2x chemical flavor!)
But it's also just salty dairy fat flavor, which is inherently likeable.
