I was asked why I posted a photo of myself in a shirt that says "queer" on #NationalComingOutDay. "Is this a recent thing?" Well, no; the shirt was about a year old at that point, and I myself am somewhat older. But this question serves as a reminder of one reason for the post: coming out is not a discrete action that you do once and then are done with, but an ongoing process of communicating aspects of your identity to other people. Unless you're completely certain in a static self-identity and famous enough that people know everything about you before they meet you, or reclusive enough that you never encounter people, you're never done coming out.

I also post on #NationalComingOutDay in solidarity with the queer people who choose to come out for the first time today, or who aren't ready to come out, or who have been out for a while. I post to remind them that they're not alone. I post because choosing to come out is a personal decision, and it's OK to be out, and it's OK to not be out. I post because whatever you choose, I have your back, and you are valid, and your choices are valid, and I love you.
(Unless you like cilantro, in which case I love you slightly less.)
