Being a Socialist in corporate America is pretty soul crushing. Any attempts at spreading class consciousness are met with side-eye at best, or (usually) mountains of reactionary propaganda.

Even simple things like "I did the math, this company makes 100x what they pay us off the work we do" is met with "well they need to keep the lights on" or something similarly frustrating.

The thing about the "Mastodon is taking over the fediverse" narrative is that it echoes the long history of ugly narratives around women/queer people "taking over" nerd spaces and it can be weaponised in the same way. Gagron basically runs the flagship instance and he is the only one really "profiting" off Mastodon (more like being paid to work on it full-time and NOT VERY WELL COMPARED TO INDUSTRY AVERAGE may I add).

Most of us admins? We just barely pay the bills with Patreon. IF WE'RE LUCKY.

Small admins rarely make back the cost of the instance.
