follow bots suck because:
1. they follow everyone, which means your users get zero choice who to federate with at all
2. they follow everyone, which means if people want private toots to not be seen by everyone running a follow bot they have to block all of them
3. they follow everyone, even private accounts, and they have no memory of who they previously tried to follow, meaning they'll follow people over and over and over

4. they remind me of those birdsite BUY FREE FOLLOWERS spambots

On a site where "toot" is the verb, it's not hard to understand why folks would advise maybe putting some toots in a container.

Like, it's nice to walk into a room that's not been entirely filled with stinky toots. Some folks like stinky toots but maybe it's nice & thoughtful to keep the shared air clearer rather than expecting everyone to wear nose plugs.

I don't see enough talk of how the fediverse is structurally resistant to external power.
here, corporations and governments don't have any central node to pressure to suppress activity that conflicts with their interests. they could at most pressure one instance at a time, but there's no way to ever get their way across the entire fediverse at once.
the importance of this feature is tremendous.
