IME people are generally not adults, and the notion of a mature populace capable of working out problems on its own is an elaborate fantasy we've concocted to feel good about ourselves. People need a lot of nudging and explicit direction to not be horrible.

People will send you death threats because they don't like your haircut. That's people. Anything better requires active cultivation.

The lack of active, human cultivation of community spaces via moderation and codes of conduct is precisely why so many online spaces turn to shit. Homo sapiens are barely-sentient apes, not reasonable, rational creatures. We talk a good game and some individuals are nice but we're loopy, nasty motherfuckers as a whole.

@AmyDentata the idea that the only thing the brain does is provide logical thought is itself a deeply irrational thought which proves how irrational the mind is.

@AmyDentata @courtney that's not just a deeply irrational thought, it's... (click for punchline)

@AmyDentata @courtney also the idea that the brain is the single thing that provides thought is about as correct as the idea that the heart is the thing that provides blood.

(This is a thing missing in most cyborg-sci-fi: how different a person would I be if my kidneys don't produce cortisol when I'm feeling stressed?)

@RAOF @AmyDentata yes! We have neurons in all sorts of organs (e.g. the stomach, hence anxiety causing stomach-related issues before the brain even gets involved)...for "logic" the brain is a data collator & processor that tries to find patterns. The body system is so much more fascinating than that.
